If you could stop time, maybe you would notice them

Our heroes are people who have let their life slip between their fingers. They shouldn’t have. Because for some of them, their life will end this evening. And that is why angels have appeared. You will probably be surprised by what they look like and what they think. The feeling’s mutual. Invisible to the human eye, these guardians of our fate are surprised by the obstacles we willingly put in our own way and in their way.

Drawing on Michal Viewegh’s outstanding novel Everyday Angels, director Alice Nellis filmed an original story in which the angels are played by Marian Labuda, Vojtech Dyk, Eliska Krenkova and Vladimir Javorsky.

This foursome tries to guide their human protégées through their hardest day. Karel (Bolek Polivka), a driving instructor, shares a dead marriage with Marie (Zuzana Bydzovska), compensating for his suffering with fantasies about his student Ester (Klara Meliskova). She has just buried her husband, though, and isn’t ready for a new relationship. Zdenek (Vaclav Neuzil) plans to kill himself in the evening because his friend Filip (Ondrej Sokol) has stolen his wife. Zdenek is not the only one who has taken this badly: his esoterically inclined mother (Zuzana Kronerova) has also fallen out with her best friend Marie, because Filip is Marie’s son. In a few hours’ time, destiny will tear apart this tangled web of relationships. Even though the angels are supposed to be impartial observers, they can’t help trying to salvage at least something out of the situation.

Alice Nellis usually makes films based on her own screenplays, but this time she has adapted a book by Michal Viewegh. “I was interested by the theme of the book.Put simply, you never know which day, which hour even, will be your last.Although we may know that in theory, in practice most of us don’t live our lives accordingly. And from time to time I feel it’s a good idea to remind yourself of this,” the director says.

The angels in our story are not supernatural beings – they represent a positive attitude towards life, with a sense of humour, compassion and understanding.
